The Gidan
A shelter shaped by movement.
The journey begins with the gidan: a dwelling connected to movement, material, climate and community.
Before architecture became a profession, it was already a way of living with the land.
A dwelling can carry memory through material, clothing, textiles, food, gathering, music, family life and the way people occupy space.
Pattern, repetition and handwork become a language of identity.
A woven surface can define a place for gathering, sitting and belonging.
Everyday objects turn a shelter into a lived space.
A shelter shaped by movement.
The journey begins with the gidan: a dwelling connected to movement, material, climate and community.
Memory carried through making.
Textiles, embroidery and weaving carry identity through colour, geometry, repetition and the hands that make them.
A room can begin on the ground.
The floor becomes a place of gathering. Pattern, craft and domestic life meet in a shared surface.
Shelter becomes permanence.
As dwelling becomes settled, earth, masonry, shade and openings create a more permanent relationship with place.
Architecture becomes community.
Individual dwellings become paths, thresholds, gathering places and relationships between people.
The language changes. The memory remains.
RDS&A works with contemporary materials and technology while continuing to ask the same fundamental question: how should a building belong to its place?
It is the people around it, the shade between spaces, the place where stories are shared and the landscape that surrounds it.
RAEES DESIGN STUDIO & ARCHITECTS uses contemporary tools, technology and construction systems while remaining attentive to landscape, climate, culture and human experience.
